"Broadly South Asian."

23andMe gives Indians vague labels like "Northern Indian & Pakistani." Helixline uses a South Asian-specific reference panel to tell you exactly which communities, regions, and ancient populations your DNA matches — using the raw data file you already have.

Receive Your Community-Level Report in 5–7 Days
Our bioinformatics pipeline runs QC, imputation, and admixture analysis against our South Asian reference panel. You receive a comprehensive report with community matching, ANI/ASI ratio, ancient DNA components, and haplogroups.

What You Will Discover

Your Helixline report goes far beyond a generic "South Asian" label. Here is what the analysis reveals:

🌍
ANI / ASI Ratio
Your personal Ancestral North Indian vs. Ancestral South Indian balance — the core metric of South Asian genetic diversity, absent from all global tests.
👥
Community Matching
Which of 75+ Indian communities does your DNA most closely match? Patel, Kashmiri Pandit, Iyer, Nair, Kayastha, Jat, Rajput — the specificity 23andMe cannot provide.
🧬
Ancient DNA Components
Steppe (Bronze Age pastoralist), IVC/Iranian Farmer (Indus Valley Civilization), and AASI (Ancient Ancestral South Indian hunter-gatherer) percentages.
📌
Haplogroups
Y-DNA (paternal) and mtDNA (maternal) haplogroup assignment at sub-clade level — R1a-Z93, H1a, J2b2, L1b, and many others relevant to South Asian lineages.
🗺
State-Level Breakdown
Which Indian states — not just regions — does your DNA most closely match? Useful for confirming family oral histories or discovering unexpected connections.
📋
Health & Pharmacogenomics (Complete tier)
Upgrade to the $50 Complete tier to add health trait analysis and pharmacogenomics — how your genetics affect drug metabolism, all calibrated for Indian populations.

2
Go to your Account Settings
Click your name or profile icon in the top-right corner → select Settings from the dropdown menu.
3
Navigate to the "23andMe Data" section
Scroll down in Settings to find the 23andMe Data section (sometimes listed as "Your Data" or "Genetic Data"). Click View or Browse Raw Data.
4
Click "Download Raw Data"
Select All DNA (not a specific chromosome) and click Download Raw Data. You will be prompted to confirm your password for security verification.
5
Wait for the download email (usually instant)
23andMe will send you an email with a download link, or the file will start downloading automatically. The file is a .zip file typically named genome_FirstName_LastName_v5_Full_YYYYMMDD.zip.

Upload the .zip file directly to Helixline
Do not unzip the file. Go to helixline.in/upload and upload the .zip file as-is. Our system accepts the compressed format from all 23andMe versions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What file format does Helixline accept for 23andMe uploads?
Helixline accepts the raw data .zip or .txt file that 23andMe provides when you download your data. You do not need to unzip it. We support all current and legacy 23andMe genotyping chip versions (v1 through v5+).
Which 23andMe chip versions are supported?
All 23andMe chip versions are supported: v1, v2, v3, v4, and v5/v5+. The newer chips cover more SNPs, but all versions contain sufficient data for a high-quality Indian ancestry analysis. Helixline's imputation pipeline fills in missing SNP positions for older chips, so your results will be just as comprehensive regardless of which chip version you were genotyped on.
How long does the analysis take after I upload?
Analysis typically takes 5–7 business days from when your file is received. You will receive an email notification when your report is ready to view. Complete tier orders receive priority processing and are typically ready within 5 business days.
Is my DNA data safe? What happens to my raw file?
Your raw DNA data is stored in India (Mumbai region, asia-south1) in compliance with India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023. Helixline does not share your genetic data with third parties for research, advertising, or any other purpose without your explicit consent. Uploaded raw files are retained for 30 days after analysis completion and then securely deleted — per our published retention policy at helixline.in/legal/retention-policy.
What if I have AncestryDNA data instead of 23andMe?
AncestryDNA raw data files are fully supported. Helixline also accepts files from MyHeritage DNA, LivingDNA, FamilyTreeDNA, and most other major consumer DNA genotyping services. The process is identical: download your raw data from your provider's website and upload it at helixline.in/upload.
Will Helixline give better Indian ancestry results than 23andMe?
Yes, substantially. 23andMe's South Asian reference panel cannot distinguish between Indian communities — Gujarati Patels, Kashmiri Pandits, Tamil Brahmins, and Bengali Kayasthas all tend to get collapsed into "Northern Indian & Pakistani" or "Broadly South Asian." Helixline's reference panel is built specifically for South Asian diversity, with 75+ Indian community clusters. Customers consistently receive far more specific and meaningful community-level breakdowns from Helixline than from any global consumer test.
